Ottawa Civic Prayer Breakfast 2024
Prayer for Mayor and Councillors

Our Heavenly Father,

We come before you acknowledging that You are the One who raises leaders up and provides them with what they need to lead.
Today, we bring our Mayor, the City Councillors, and the city they serve so diligently, to You.

We confess we have not always remembered the responsibility and weight they carry. And that through attitude or action may have treated them disrespectfully. Please forgive us.

We thank you for each one who serves the City of Ottawa. For the inspiration and help you provide to them.
We thank You, that despite success or failure, they persist in their service to their community.
We are grateful knowing that You will strengthen them and provide for each of their needs.

For Mayor Sutcliffe, help him to lead the diverse team of Councillors using all the skills and experience You have given.

Thank you for providing him with solutions to problems that seem too big for the council. When he faces challenges, or discouragement, may he know he is upheld.

Thank you for his family. Protect and provide for them as they are a help and support to him.

We call to mind the name of our City Councillors, and we thank you for them and for their families who support them in their work.
Help them as they seek to serve their constituents by listening to and acting to address their varied needs.
May they celebrate their colleague’s skills and perspectives recalling their shared commitment to the prospering of our city.

And, for the support staff spread throughout the myriads of departments that make up our municipal government, we pray you would affirm their contributions and fill them with the strength and care needed to carry out each task given them.

Today, we honour and bless each one who works for the good of our city, Ottawa.
In your name, Jesus, we pray.

Amen

Prayer for First Responders

Gracious God, we thank you for Ottawa’s First Responders.

Thank you for Chief Stubbs, Chief Hutt, and Chief Poirier. Grant them wisdom and strength from your Holy Spirit. Bless them and all the people who serve under their leadership.

Merci, Seigneur, pour tous les Premiers Intervenants. Soyez
leur bouclier et leur force.

Jesus—you who loved us when we were your enemies—give these men and women your courage and grace.

Surround them with your angels when they are in danger.

Give them eyes to see and ears to hear all that they need for the work you call them to do.
Give them also eyes to see and ears to hear your Spirit at work alongside them.

Protect their hearts and minds. Heal them from trauma. Bless their working relationships with colleagues. Build strong connections between them and the communities they serve.

Let your Spirit be with them at home. Bless them as spouses, partners, parents, and friends. Let your hand be on their families. Encourage them with peace, rest, and renewal.

Remind each person that you are with them. Always. That you love them. Always. And that you hear them when they pray.

Bénis ces hommes et ces femmes et rafraichis-leurs par ton Esprit-Saint.

In the name of Jesus, our Prince of Peace, Amen.

Prayer for Children and Youth of Ottawa

Lord, we lift up the children and youth of Ottawa, thanking You for each precious life and for the opportunity to be part of their journey. You know each of them by name, and You see the dreams, hopes, and challenges that fill their hearts.

Draw them to Your salvation and strengthen their faith, that they may abound in the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Protect their families, strengthen their relationships with love, and guide their parents with wisdom (Colossians 3:14, Proverbs 22:6). Preserve their innocence and shield them from harmful influences, helping them grow in strength and courage (Matthew 18:10, 1 Samuel 17). Bless their education, providing guidance and nurturing mentors
(Proverbs 2:6, 1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Lord, we ask for Your divine protection over the unborn, shielding them with Your love and safeguarding their lives with grace and mercy.
We pray for those suffering, especially those facing abuse, poverty, and illness, and for those who are in foster care, or who are experiencing homelessness. Bring healing, peace, and hope, surrounding them with Your love and protection (Psalm 34:18, Isaiah 41:10). Lord, where needed, raise others up to advocate for their rescue, and let Your justice prevail (Isaiah 1:17).

For children with special needs, we ask that You bring healing, grant them resilience, and fill them with Your peace (Psalm 139:14, 2 Corinthians 12:9).

Lord, be with the missionaries, community workers, and caregivers, who are called to serve these precious ones in their various specialties, giving them compassion and strength as they serve (Isaiah 1:17, Micah 6:8).

May Your love bring justice and healing to all the children and youth of Ottawa, as we trust in Your plans of hope and peace (Jeremiah 29:11). Remind each one that they are wonderfully made and deeply loved by You (Psalm 139:14, Isaiah 43:4), and may they grow to fulfill their God-given potential.

Thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
